In 1970, CITIZEN launched the world’s first watch with a case made of titanium, a material that was being used for space development at the time. To celebrate 50 years since this milestone, CITIZEN is launching two CITIZEN Titanium Technology 50th Anniversary Limited Models, inspired by the vastness of outer space.

 

CITIZEN Titanium Technology 50th Anniversary Limited Models feature a Duratect^*1 DLC case and band, and the watch dials have a striking blue color inspired by outer space. The case back also includes a serial number unique to each Anniversary Limited Model. 2020 marks fifty years since the world’s first titanium watch, and the possibilities of Super Titanium^TM*2 are no longer limited to watches here on Earth. The material is now being used for the next generation of space development. Duratect DLC will be used on a lunar exploration craft as part of the HAKUTO-R^*3 multinational commercial space development project. The project’s lunar lander, scheduled to be launched in 2022, will contain Super Titanium^TM parts treated with Duratect DLC.

 

The Satellite Wave GPS*4 F950 limited-edition model features a blue gradient dial to evoke the vast expanse of outer space. The subdials and second hand are accented with a gold color reminiscent of glittering stars in the night sky. The watch also comes with a spare nylon band. The advanced Satellite Wave GPS Caliber F950 movement in this watch can receive time signals in as little as 3 seconds – the fastest GPS satellite signal reception in the world. The high-speed twin coil motor allows the hands to move incredibly fast in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. It takes less than one second for the hands to make a complete rotation (a full 360-degree rotation of the minute hand). The quick reception time and rapid rotation of the hands make adjusting the time speedy and stress-free.

  

This limited-edition Eco-Drive radio-controlled*5 model has a dial featuring shades of blue to express the depth and vastness of the galaxy, accented with glittering stars. The Caliber H145 movement receives time signals from multiple radio transmitters in Japan, China, Europe, and North America to automatically adjust to the correct local time and date. The light-powered Eco-Drive movement means that the watch never needs a battery change. CITIZEN’s Eco-Drive radio-controlled analog world time feature with synchronized time adjustment is available in 26 time zones.

*1 Duratect is CITIZEN’s proprietary surface hardening technology that enhances the surface hardness of metals such as stainless steel and titanium, protecting watch bodies from scratches and damage. This technology offers excellent abrasion quality and maintains luster of metals for long periods of time. Duratect DLC achieves Vickers hardness of 1,000-1,400 by coating an amorphous carbon hard film—mainly composed of carbon and hydrogen—on the surface of the material.

*2 Super Titanium™ is CITIZEN’s proprietary technology to treat solid titanium with surface hardening technology. It is at least 5 times harder than stainless steel, resistant to scratches, lightweight and gentle to the skin for comfortable wearing.

*3 HAKUTO-R is a program that coordinates two lunar exploration missions by ispace Inc scheduled for 2022 and 2023. Developing its own lander and rover, it will make a lunar landing in 2022 and lunar exploration in 2023 using the SpaceX’s Falcon 9.

*4 GPS satellite-synchronized watch captures the date and time signals sent by GPS satellites from space — orbiting 20,000 kilometers above the Earth — bringing ultra-precise timekeeping to wherever people are on the face of the globe.

*5 Eco-Drive is CITIZEN’s proprietary technology that powers watches using any natural or artificial light source, eliminating the need to replace batteries. Certified as an Eco Mark product for the first time in the watch industry. Radio-controlled watches receive signals from radio transmitters to correct the time and calendar automatically.
